If Aarhus had an island, it would be the Ø-streets. The area’s streets are all named after danish islands, and the neighborhood has since the 1970s been characterized by a dedicated community. The cozy atmosphere still exists but it needs attention to keep the community thriving.
Bureau Deoturs called for help from thirty-two island kids from small islands around Denmark, to rearm the neighbourhood with cozy atmosphere and a buzzling life. Together with Bureau Detours the kids built benches, swings and plant boxes and developed small oases in the streets of Aarhus. The name of the project, ÆØAA, is an abbreviation of “æ ø i Aarhus” (An Island in Aarhus).
